TODD SOLONDZ’S GIFT FOR CASTING CLEARLY EXTENDS TO ANIMALS...THIS HAPLESS CANINE SERVES TO HIGHLIGHT THE FAILINGS OF THE HUMANS AROUND IT
The world is a place filled with contradiction, conflict, humour, loneliness, love, regret and revelation according to Todd Solondz in this most unusual collection of stories.
The film opens with Wiener-Dog (a sausage dog in Australian parlance) taken in from a dog home by a family looking for a pooch for their child. From there and for one reason or another the dog moves from family to family and person to person playing witness to events large and small in people’s lives.
From the world of children to the world of those with not much time left, the film gently weaves its way through these lives with warmth and spirit. But ultimately there’s its human disconnection that proves the common theme despite the happy trails of our hero Wiener-Dog.
One of the lovely things about Wiener-Dog are the small personal stories and moments that our hero drifts in and out of and which exhibits Solondz’s exceptional story telling ability in pulling so much out of this array of bite-sized story chunks.
